An EHQ (European Headquater) is a separate legal entity within a company, whose main task and responsibility it is to coordinate activities for a number of subsidiaries/ business units/divisions/distributors/clients across Europe. Often the EHQ is an integrated regional headquarter that also includes control over the Middle East and Africa. For many companies, it works purely as a cost center, without generating directly any revenue. Typical activities to be co-ordinated are regional strategy, sales & marketing, customer support, HR, finance and legal. The EHQ acts as the interface between corporate headquarters and the local subsidiaries/distributors/ clients in Europe. Most EHQs are of the stand-alone type, meaning they are not incorporated with other local operational activities, like country sales units, manufacturing or logistics. These subsidiaries are, usually for tax reasons, organized as a corporate unit. A multinational company can therefore operate several corporate units in a country like Switzerland, Belgium or the Netherlands. There could be the EHQ, then a separate unit, that owns all the National sales subsidiaries around Europe, Africa and the Middle East. In addition, there would be another corporate unit, owning all the manufacturing and logistic outfits within Europe, Africa and the Middle East. These latter two might only be letter box companies, but generating billions of revenue.There may also be financing (leasing etc) units that are kept separate.
